Anna Atkins, working at the dawn of the Victorian era, carried out radical experiments to document botanical species using a new artistic medium. Her cyanotype photograms of ferns and algae were made into books featuring the first photographic images. They are striking and ethereal, a perfect synthesis of art and science. This book pays tribute to her work as an true pioneer, reprinting the seminal works and is a wonderful insight into how beautiful and detailed this type of work can be for artistic or scientific purposes.
