During the early 20th century, the Scottish Colourist S.J. Peploe frequently depicted Iona with the majestic Burg of the Isle of Mull as its backdrop, resembling a temple overlooking the island. Burg’s dramatic landscape, with its cliffs and cascading rock slopes leading to a flattish plateau formed by later volcanic activity, commands the archipelago of southwest Mull.
